You’ve already picked out a domain name, purchased your hosting, and installed WordPress. Your blog is up and running and you even have a few blog posts published or ready to go.

If you are running your blog as an online business, one of the most important tasks you can take on is setting clear goals for your business. Without any goals, you can certainly have a perfectly happy blog that even makes some money.

But if you’re looking to replace your day job, you need to be very strategic with every step on your way to success. It won’t do to just say, “I’m going to have a successful blog.” You need to define your success so you know where to focus your efforts.

Setting goals for your brand new blog. Are you setting yourself up for success?

How to Set Clear Goals for Your Brand New Blog

There’s been a lot of research into what makes some people more successful than others. Everyone takes a different path to success, but people who achieve their goals have two things in common: they set clear goals and they don’t give up.

Be specific about your goals

When you set your goals, it is imperative that you are very specific with them. Unclear goals would be Simply stating that you want to reach a certain target audience or to make money is not a specific goal. A specific goal would be something like “I want to gain 100 more likes on Facebook in the next three months.” Or, “I want to make an additional $5,000.00 in the next three months.” Goals need to be specific in order to be successful.

Write everything down

No matter how trivial you may think it may sound, it is imperative to write everything down on your action plan. Without writing it down, it is as though you are not declaring it to the world.

Studies have shown that you’re more likely to accomplish your goals when you write them down. So just do it, okay?

Work backward from your big goals to set sub-goals

Break down your goals into sub-goals. Or you might think of them as steps to achieving your big goals. Break it down and be specific.

Breaking down your goals makes them easier to reach. If you have a goal to make an extra $1000 in the next six months, break it down into the steps you’ll take to reach that goal.

For example, “Pin affiliate links to Pinterest” or “Increase traffic from Facebook” However, you want to do it, make sure to break it down specifically.

Give yourself a deadline

Giving yourself a deadline to achieve a goal is probably the best thing you can ever do for yourself. You are accountable to yourself and your business partners by attaching a timeline to your goals.

Be realistic about your timeline then stick to it. Having a clear plan helps you stay focused and avoid procrastination.

Be accountable

Being accountable to yourself or your business partner helps you make sure you follow through on your path to success. What happens if you don’t achieve your sub-goals? What will happen if you miss a deadline? Think about that and write it down.

Blogging for business requires that you’re creating, monitoring, and promoting your website consistently. It can easily get overwhelming with all the things you need to do. Creating goals helps you stay focused and on the path to success.
